Belém Tower, reopened

After thirteen months behind scaffolding, the fortress on the Tagus takes visitors again. It also works differently: every ticket is now for a half-hour slot, and the slots run out.

Belém Tower shut in April 2025 for conservation work paid for by Portugal's share of the EU recovery plan (PRR). It reopened to the public on 27 May 2026, the day after an official ceremony, with a new way in: timed slots, a cap on how many people can be inside, and a cap on the day.

If your plan still looks like "turn up, queue on the footbridge, climb", it needs an update. Here is what changed, which tours missed the tower while it was closed, and how we would book it now.

The quick answer

Belém Tower reopened on 27 May 2026 after its first major restoration since 1998. Entry is by half-hour slot from 9:30 am to 5 pm, with at most 60 people inside and 960 a day. Tickets cost €15 online or at the kiosk in front of the Jerónimos Monastery, about 1 km away, and there is no ticket desk at the tower. Book your slot before you travel to Belém.

When did Belém Tower reopen, and why was it closed?

It closed in April 2025 for conservation and restoration under the PRR, the first deep work on the monument since 1998. A ceremony on 26 May 2026 marked the reopening, and visitors came back on 27 May.

The monument's own news post of 25 May 2026 calls it "a primeira obra de fundo realizada no monumento desde 1998": the first major intervention since 1998. The previous round ran from February 1997 to January 1998. The stated aims were better conservation and safety, and keeping the building authentic for the next generations.

Lisbon's mayor, Carlos Moedas, toured the works on 4 March 2026. Time Out Lisboa reported the reopening as a monument "de cara lavada" (freshly scrubbed) with "um novo modelo de visitação", and says the cultural programme will lean on school visits and guided formats for different audiences.

How do the new timed slots at Belém Tower work?

Every ticket is for one of 15 half-hour slots, from 9:30 to 9:59 am through 4:30 to 5 pm. No more than 60 people can be inside at once, and no more than 960 in a day.

The rules sit in the internal regulation shared by Jerónimos and the tower. The numbers are tight on purpose. One narrow spiral staircase links every floor, shared by people going up and coming down, so visitors move in waves. Capping the building at 60 keeps those waves small.

Do the maths and 960 across 15 slots is 64 tickets per half hour. Your slot is the window in which you must enter. Tickets are scanned at the door by QR code or barcode, so a screenshot on your phone works. Time Out's launch piece spoke of about 600 visitors a day. The regulation now says 960, and that is the figure we plan with.

Where can you buy Belém Tower tickets now?

Online on the official MMP shop, for a date and a slot, or at the ticket kiosk in front of the Jerónimos Monastery. There is no ticket office at the tower itself.

This is the change that catches people out. The only physical ticket desk for both monuments is the kiosk on the square facing Jerónimos, about 1 km east of the tower, a 15-minute walk. Walk to the tower first without a ticket and you walk back.

The adult ticket is €15; ages 13 to 24 and over-65s pay €7.50; children up to 12 go free. On the official Belém Tower page the top price shows as €15.92, which is the face value plus the MEO Blueticket service fee. You can move a booked slot with 24 hours' notice. Watch out for the "open" voucher option on the same page: it is not a valid ticket until you go back and schedule a time, and that time is subject to availability.

Our take: buy online as soon as your Belém day is fixed. The kiosk sells what is left, and on a busy day there may be nothing left to sell.

What changed for Lisboa Card and Acesso 52 holders?

Both still get in free, but both need a slot. Lisboa Card holders book a €0 ticket with their card code; residents of Portugal have been able to book Acesso 52 tickets online since 20 August 2026.

The Lisboa Card covers the tower, and lisboacard.org is blunt about the catch: the tower and Jerónimos need a time slot, and you cannot book it before you have swapped your email voucher for the physical card. Card holders also draw on a limited daily quota. Once you hold the card, go to the shop's Torre de Belém - Lisboa Card page, pick a slot, choose "LISBOA CARD" at payment and type the code printed on the card. At the tower you tap the card on a validation device; the ticket is not valid until you do.

Residents of Portugal (citizens, and foreigners with legal residence and a tax number) get free entry 52 days a year under Acesso 52. Until this summer those tickets were sold only at the Jerónimos kiosk, and the official post of 20 August 2026 admits that same-day entries were often gone by the time residents got to the front. Now they can be booked online. More on both in our free entry post.

Which tours skipped Belém Tower during the restoration?

Guests report that bike, e-bike and walking tours in 2025 either passed a tower wrapped in scaffolding or dropped the stop altogether. In 2026 those tours stop outside again, and only two listings go in.

The reviews tell the story. On the private Belém and Jerónimos walk, a July 2025 guest wrote that "there was no communication about the Belem tower being under construction, so we didn't even go there". On the bike tour from downtown, an August 2025 rider found it "under renovation and its covered". A July 2025 review of the riverside e-bike tour warns that seeing the tower "wasn't possible on our tour due to renovations".

That is over. The catch now is different: most tours never went inside anyway, and they still don't. Here is what each one does at the tower in 2026. The e-bike tour has two 2026 reviews from guests whose group never reached Belém at all, so read that line twice.

How should you book Belém Tower now?

Book the official slot first, then build the day around it. Take the 9:30 am slot if you can, and do Jerónimos afterwards.

The first slot is the calm one: the building is fresh, the stair is empty and the light on the river is low. Walk to Jerónimos after (15 minutes along the gardens), where the cloister runs on hourly slots of its own. If you would rather have someone else hold the tickets, the guided tower tour costs $56, includes entry and cancels free up to 24 hours before; its "Tower 11h + Jerónimos 14h" option books both monuments for you. It has 16 reviews, all five stars. That is a small sample, so judge it as one.

The $34 entry ticket with a host also includes entry, but it is non-refundable and cannot be changed. The host gives a short talk outside and hands over the tickets, and one August 2026 guest says he asked for a review before sending them and then left. With 18 reviews and a €15 face value, buy it only when the official slots are sold out and your date is fixed. Prices on Viator are from-prices and move.
