Sunset and wine on the Tagus

A skipper takes up to 12 guests out of Doca de Belém on a sailboat for two hours, Portuguese wine in hand, past Belém Tower and along the riverfront as the sun drops. It's how most visitors see the tower from the river side, and with nearly 3,000 reviews it has the longest record of anything on this site.

Sunset & Wine Sail from Belém

About this experience

This is a sail, not a tower visit. You board at Doca de Belém, the marina next to the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, and spend two hours on the Tagus with a skipper and a crew member. The tower goes by from the river, an angle you can't get from the footbridge: the bastion, the Virgin and Child statue facing the water, the watchtowers in low sun. The route also takes in the 25 de Abril bridge, MAAT and the city waterfront.

Viator does not name the supplier on the listing, but the meeting point gives it away: you check in at least 30 minutes early at a van stand with a big orange and blue flag that says "Rent a Boat". Guests report vinho verde ("green wine"), cheese and snacks, and crews who keep the glasses full. The listing promises Portuguese wine and says plainly that this is not a wine tasting. One guest moved to a bigger catamaran leaving from Alcântara found it more party than tour.

Two things to know. The boat runs in all weather, so a grey evening means no sunset but the sail still goes; dress for wind. And there's no tower entry. If you want inside too, book a morning slot on the official shop (EUR 15) and sail in the evening.

  • 12 guests at most on a sailboat

What guests say

★★★★★

Our taxi dropped us off at the wrong pier but the staff from “Rent a Boat” coached us to their meeting point using FaceTime! The Captain and mate were skilled sailors and hosts who made us feel comfortable welcome. The wine flowed, the views were delightful and the sunset delivered!

It was lovely to see Lisbon from the water, especially Belém. Crew were fantastic, very attentive. Good communication.

Very relaxing trip on the river with a small group! The boat team were very personable and offered refreshments throughout the trip. They had blankets for when the sun went down and the temperatures dropped significantly.

I booked the sunset river cruise and it was one of the nicest things we did. First of all the timing is great to see sunset 5:30 to 7:30 and the crew was amazing. They provided “green” wine and so much info about the area and the people.

Tips before you book

  • Tell your taxi "Doca de Belém", not just Belém. One guest's driver went to the wrong pier, and the office guided them in by video call.
  • Bring a layer even in summer. Guests mention the temperature dropping after sunset; the crews hand out blankets.
  • Departure times follow the sunset, so check yours on the booking. One October group sailed from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.
  • Offered a switch to another boat or marina? Ask what changes. A guest moved to the Alcântara catamaran found far less commentary.
  • Pair it with the guided tower tour in the morning and you get both angles in one day.

Frequently asked questions

Who runs the 2-hour Lisbon sunset and wine sail?

The Viator listing does not name the supplier. You check in at a van stand under an orange and blue "Rent a Boat" flag at Doca de Belém, and guests refer to the staff by that name. A skipper and one crew member sail the boat.

Does the sunset sail go inside Belém Tower?

No, you see the tower from the water only. Entry costs EUR 15 on the official shop, free with the Lisboa Card, in half-hour slots from 09:30 to 17:00, so you can go in during the day and sail at night.

What happens if it rains?

The listing says the tour operates in all weather conditions, so dress for it. Free cancellation runs until 24 hours before, which is your way out if the forecast looks grim.

Can children come on the sunset and wine sail?

Yes, with an adult: Viator prices children 4 to 12 and infants up to 3 separately. Wine is for 18 and over only, and anyone who seems drunk can be refused service without a refund.
