Booking choice: The private Belém and Jerónimos walk, from $195 per person. Check dates Tour details
Belém Tower and the Jerónimos Monastery were built in the same years for the same king, Manuel I, and they share one directorate, one set of closing days and one ticket kiosk. They do not share a ticket. Each one sells its own timed entry, and the slots don't line up.
This guide gives you the order, the walk, the costs and the places to eat, with prices and hours from the monuments' own internal regulations.
The quick answer
There is no combined ticket: the tower costs €15 and the Jerónimos cloister €18, so €33 for an adult, or nothing with a Lisboa Card. Book the tower at 9:30, walk 15 minutes east, and take a 10:30 or 11:30 cloister slot; the church is free from 10:30 Tuesday to Saturday and from 2 pm on Sundays. Both close on Mondays. Eat a custard tart at Pastéis de Belém on the way.

Is there a combined ticket for Belém Tower and Jerónimos?
No. The official combos pair Jerónimos with the Coach Museum and the Ajuda Palace, never with the tower. Bought separately, the two cost €33 for an adult.
What each one costs in 2026:
| Ticket | Adult | 13 to 24, 65+ | Up to 12 | Slots |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Belém Tower | €15 | €7.50 | Free | Every half hour, 9:30 to 17:00 |
| Jerónimos cloister | €18 | €9 | Free | Hourly, 9:30 to 17:00 |
| Jerónimos church | Free | Free | Free | No ticket |
| Both | €33 | €16.50 | Free | Two separate bookings |
Both sell on the same official MEO Blueticket shop: the official ticket shop for the tower, the cloister under event 14759. Book them in one sitting so the times fit. With a Lisboa Card both are free, but each needs its own €0 slot; see the tickets guide.
Jerónimos with the cloister ticket included and your own guide, then the riverfront and the tower.
Check dates for the private Belém and Jerónimos walkShould you visit Belém Tower or Jerónimos first?
The tower first, at 9:30, then Jerónimos. The tower's single stair is at its calmest at opening, and the monastery church only opens at 10:30.
A morning that works, Tuesday to Saturday:
| Time | Where | What |
|---|---|---|
| 9:20 | Belém Tower | Arrive for the 9:30 slot |
| 9:30 to 10:30 | Belém Tower | Bastion, stair, roof |
| 10:30 to 10:45 | Riverside walk | East along the river, then inland through the gardens |
| 10:45 | Pastéis de Belém | Takeaway tarts |
| 11:30 to 12:30 | Jerónimos | Cloister slot, then the free church |
| Afternoon | Padrão, MAAT or the river | Or a sunset sail at the end of the day |
The reverse order works too. The cloister's 9:30 to 10:30 slot has a separate lane for guided groups, which is the "early entrance" some reviewers mention, so independent visitors share that hour with the groups. If you go to Jerónimos first, book the tower for 11:00 or later.
On Sundays the church opens only at 14:00, so a Sunday plan is tower in the morning and church in the afternoon.

How far is Belém Tower from Jerónimos?
About 1 km, a 15-minute walk. Tram 15E covers part of it between the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos and Largo da Princesa stops.
From the monastery, cross the Praça do Império garden towards the river, take the underpass under the railway and Avenida da Índia, and walk west along the riverside promenade. You pass the Padrão dos Descobrimentos on the way, and the tower comes into view at the end. It is flat the whole way.
With small children or tired legs, take tram 15E one stop west, from Mosteiro dos Jerónimos to Largo da Princesa, the stop closest to the tower, and walk down to the river from there. More options in getting to Belém Tower.
When is the Jerónimos church open, and is it free?
Yes, it is free. The church opens Tuesday to Saturday from 10:30 to 17:00, and on Sundays from 14:00. It is closed on Mondays like the rest of the monastery.
The church of Santa Maria de Belém holds the tombs of Vasco da Gama and the poet Luís de Camões. Entry is free, but the directorate can limit numbers if it gets crowded: up to 200 people may be inside at once. The cloister, with its two storeys of carved arcades, is the part you pay €18 for, with up to 300 visitors at a time and 3,500 a day across the monastery.
Morning visitors who arrive before 10:30 find the church closed. One July 2025 guest on a private walk wrote that they "waited about 45min outside just waiting to get in" after being told to arrive before 9:00. The monastery opens at 9:30.

A private guide for Jerónimos, cloister ticket included, then the Padrão and 30 minutes outside the tower. Rated 4.7.
Explore the private Belém and Jerónimos walk Tour detailsHow much does a day at Belém Tower and Jerónimos cost?
€33 per adult for the two monuments, €43 with the Padrão viewpoint, plus transport and tarts. A 24-hour Lisboa Card at €31 covers all three and the tram.
An adult's day in Belém, with official 2026 prices:
| Item | Price | With a Lisboa Card |
|---|---|---|
| Belém Tower | €15 | Free (book a slot) |
| Jerónimos cloister | €18 | Free (book a slot) |
| Jerónimos church | Free | Free |
| Padrão dos Descobrimentos viewpoint | €10 | Free |
| Tram 15E there and back | €6.60 on board | Free |
| Total | €49.60 | €31 for the 24-hour card |
The card wins as soon as you add the Padrão or a second tram ride. Youth and senior tickets halve the monument prices, and children up to 12 go free at all three. Tram fares are Carris's 2026 on-board prices (carris.pt).
Where should you eat between the two?
Pastéis de Belém, on Rua de Belém 84-92, a few minutes from the monastery. It has made its custard tarts since 1837 and opens every day.
The bakery says its recipe comes from the Jerónimos monastery itself (pasteisdebelem.pt). There are two queues: the takeaway counter, which moves fast, and the line for a table in the tiled rooms inside. Take away and eat on the Praça do Império lawn if the table queue is long. Food and drink are not allowed inside either monument, so finish before your slot.
Most tours stop here. The private tuk-tuk gives you 10 minutes at the bakery, though the tarts are not included in its price.

Tarts, Jerónimos, the tower and the Padrão in two hours, with hotel pickup in your own tuk-tuk.
Check dates for the private Belém tuk-tukWhat is closed in Belém, and when?
Both monuments close on Mondays, 1 January, Easter Sunday, 1 May, 13 June and 25 December. The National Archaeology Museum in the monastery's west wing is closed for works.
- Mondays: the tower, the cloister and the church are all shut. The riverfront and the Padrão (open daily) are your Monday plan.
- 13 June: St Anthony's Day, a Lisbon holiday, closes both monuments.
- National Archaeology Museum: closed for works through 2026, opening only for the European Heritage Days in late September. Don't plan on it.
- Free days: 18 April, 18 May and the Heritage Days are free for everyone at both monuments, and the busiest days of the year.
For seasonal changes, see the winter 2026-27 post.
Is a guided tour of both worth it?
If you want the story, yes. A private walk gives you a guide inside Jerónimos with the cloister ticket; the guided tower tour has an option that adds Jerónimos in the afternoon.
- The private Belém and Jerónimos walk (Cooltour Lisbon, from $195, tiered by group size, 4.7 from 60 reviews) includes the cloister ticket, a guided visit inside and church access, then 30 minutes at the Padrão and 30 minutes outside the tower, with no tower entry. Guests praise the guides; 2025 complaints mention broken headsets, a wait before the 9:30 opening and a tower skipped during the works.
- The guided tower tour ($56, 5.0 from 16) includes the tower ticket and has an option called "Tower 11h + Jerónimos 14h". Its inclusions list names the tower ticket only, so check at checkout what that option adds for the monastery. One guest wrote that the chance "to skip the lines at the tower and monastery is well worth it".
- The private tuk-tuk stops 15 minutes at Jerónimos and 10 at the tower, outside both. A quick look, not a visit.

The tower with a guide and tickets at 11:00, and an option that continues to Jerónimos at 14:00. Free cancellation.
