Belém Tower tickets

Since the May 2026 reopening, nobody walks straight in. Every ticket names a half-hour slot, and on busy days they run out. Here is how to get one, and when a tour is worth paying for.

Booking choice: The guided Belém Tower tour, from $56 per person. Check dates Tour details

A Belém Tower ticket costs €15 for an adult in 2026, and it is only valid for the date and half-hour slot printed on it. The tower reopened on 27 May 2026 after a year of restoration with a new rule: no more than 60 people inside at once, and no more than 960 a day. That cap is why the old walk-up queue has become a booking question.

Prices and rules below come from the official ticket shop run for Museus e Monumentos de Portugal by MEO Blueticket, and from the monument's internal regulations, both checked in October 2026. Viator prices are from-prices in US dollars and move a little.

The quick answer

Buy the €15 ticket (€7.50 for ages 13 to 24 and over-65s, free up to 12) on the official MEO Blueticket shop, pick a date and a half-hour slot, and show the QR code at the door. Changes need 24 hours' notice. Walk-up tickets are sold only at the kiosk in front of Jerónimos, about 1 km away. Lisboa Card holders book a €0 slot. Only two Viator listings include entry: a $34 ticket with a host (non-refundable) and a $56 guided visit.

How much is a Belém Tower ticket in 2026?

€15 for adults, €7.50 for ages 13 to 24 and over 65, free for children up to 12. Online, the shop adds a small service fee, which takes an adult ticket to €15.92.

The full price list on the official shop, which sells event 14776, "Torre de Belém":

The ticket covers the tower only. The Jerónimos cloister is a separate €18 ticket, and no official combo puts the two together; the pair costs €33. Our Belém Tower and Jerónimos plan has the order that works.

How do you book a timed slot on the official shop?

Open the MEO Blueticket page for Torre de Belém, choose a date, choose a half-hour slot, add tickets per age group and pay. The QR code is scanned at the door.

  1. Open the shop. Go to the official ticket shop (the tower's own website links to it). Lisboa Card holders use a different page; see below.
  2. Pick the date. The calendar shows the next few days first; "More dates" opens the rest. The tower is closed on Mondays.
  3. Pick the slot. There are 15 a day, every half hour from 9:30 to 9:59 through to the last one, 16:30 to 17:00. You enter during that window.
  4. Add tickets. One line per age group. Add children as free tickets so the whole family sits in the same slot.
  5. Pay and keep the QR code. Entry is checked by an optical reader, from a QR code or barcode, on paper or on your phone.

Voucher or dated slot? The shop also sells an open voucher. It is not a ticket until you use the (Re)scheduling button at the top of the shop to attach a slot, and a slot can only be set or changed with 24 hours' notice. Book the dated slot straight away unless you really can't pick a day.

Can you buy Belém Tower tickets at the door?

No. The only ticket office is the kiosk in front of the Jerónimos Monastery, about 1 km east, which sells leftover slots for both monuments.

The internal regulations say it plainly: tickets are sold at the physical ticket office in the kiosk facing the monastery, for both monuments, and online, always for a set day and time. Nothing is sold on the footbridge. Walk there and back and you lose half an hour, so check the shop on your phone before you set off: if the online slots for today are gone, the kiosk is unlikely to have many either.

Walk-ups do best at opening. The kiosk and both monuments open at 9:30, and a midweek morning in October to March gives you the best odds. On a summer Saturday, expect the next free slot to be hours away.

Is Belém Tower free with the Lisboa Card?

Yes, but you still need a slot. Exchange your voucher for the physical card first, then book a €0 ticket on the shop's Lisboa Card page with your card number.

The steps, from lisboacard.org and the shop:

  • Collect the card at a pick-up point in Lisbon. You can't book the tower with the email voucher.
  • Book on the Torre de Belém - Lisboa Card page (event 16204), entering the code printed on the card (LC followed by nine digits).
  • At the tower, your €0 ticket and the card are checked on a reader.

Card holders get a limited number of daily entries, so book as soon as the card is in your hand. The card costs €31 for 24 hours, €51 for 48 and €62 for 72 (adults, prices valid 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027) and also covers tram 15E, the bus and the train to Belém. With the tower (€15) and the Jerónimos cloister (€18) on the same day, a 24-hour card pays for itself before the first tram ride.

Other free entry: residents of Portugal get 52 free days a year with Acesso 52, bookable online for the tower since 20 August 2026 (official notice). Everyone gets in free on 18 April, 18 May and the European Heritage Days in September. The details are in free entry in 2026.

What do the $34 and $56 Viator tickets add over the €15 ticket?

The $34 listing is the same entry plus a host who gives a short talk outside and hands over the tickets; it is non-refundable. The $56 tour keeps a guide with you inside and cancels for free.

Both listings have few reviews, so read them as a small sample. On the $34 ticket, two 5-star guests loved the building; one, in October 2026, called it "pretty plain inside but the history and outside terrace and cannon rooms were incredible". A 2-star review from August 2026 is the one to read before you pay: "You get a 10 minute explanation of the building [...] The guide made us leave a review before he would send the tickets." The host then transferred the tickets and left.

Our take: if official slots are open, buy them and keep the difference. If they are gone, the guided tour is the better of the two, because you get a guide inside and can still cancel. It meets by the Gago Coutinho seaplane monument, the "airplane statue", next to Confeitaria Nacional Belém, and the guide wears a red lanyard.

What can you do when Belém Tower slots are sold out?

Check the shop again the day before, try the Jerónimos kiosk at 9:30, or book one of the two listings that hold tickets. Or see it from outside and from the river, which costs nothing or less than you think.

  • Check again. Slots can be rescheduled up to 24 hours before, so the calendar changes. Look the evening before and first thing in the morning.
  • Go early to the kiosk. Leftover slots are sold in front of Jerónimos from 9:30.
  • Book a ticket-holding listing. The guided tour with tickets ($56, free cancellation) or the entry ticket with a host ($34, non-refundable, cannot be changed).
  • Skip the inside. The riverside lawn, the promenade and the view of the footbridge are free. Our worth-it guide says who loses little by staying out.
  • See it from the water. A sunset sail passes the tower from the river side: see the boat options compared.

No slot left? The sunset and wine sail passes the tower from the river, twelve guests at most.

Which time slot should you book?

The 9:30 slot. The stair is quietest and the river light is soft. The last slots, from 4 pm, are the next best.

Tour groups tend to arrive mid-morning, and the single spiral stair is where a busy slot hurts: people climb and descend on the same steps and wait on the landings. Wednesday to Friday are easier than weekends, and Tuesdays catch the backlog from the Monday closure.

If you also want Jerónimos, book the tower slot first and fit the monastery around it, because the two run separate timed tickets. And if you are coming in winter, check the winter 2026-27 post for this season's notes.

What are the rules at the door?

No large bags, trolleys or big backpacks, no food or drink, no selfie sticks or tripods, and photos without flash. Children under 12 must be with an adult.

From the internal regulations:

  • Bags: large bags, trolleys and big backpacks are refused. Travel light.
  • Food and drink: none inside. Finish the custard tart on the grass.
  • Cameras: phones and personal cameras are fine without flash; selfie sticks, tripods and stabilisers are not.
  • Access: wheelchairs, prams and walking aids can't go up to the bastion terrace, and the upper floors are up a narrow spiral stair with no lift.
  • Opening: Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30 to 17:30, last entry 17:00. Closed Mondays, 1 January, Easter Sunday, 1 May, 13 June and 25 December.

The reopening itself, and what changed with the slots, is covered in our reopening post.

A host meets you at the tower with your timed ticket. Non-refundable, so book only once your date is fixed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a refund on an official Belém Tower ticket?

Plan on rescheduling rather than a refund: the shop lets you move your slot with at least 24 hours' notice, using the (Re)scheduling button. The $34 Viator ticket can't be changed at all; the $56 guided tour cancels free up to 24 hours before.

Do children need a ticket for Belém Tower?

Children up to 12 go free, but add them to the booking as free tickets so the whole group shares one slot. Under-12s must be with an adult.

Does the Belém Tower ticket include Jerónimos?

No. The cloister is a separate €18 ticket with its own hourly slots, and no official combined ticket includes the tower. The church at Jerónimos is free.

How long is a Belém Tower ticket valid?

For one entry during your half-hour slot on the date you chose. Once inside, nobody times you, but most visits take under an hour.
