Belém Tower in winter

The tower keeps one timetable all year. What changes in winter is the sky: the sun drops behind the river around 5:15 pm in December, and the sunset sails leave an hour earlier than in summer.

Lisbon's winter is mild by northern standards and wet by Portuguese ones. For Belém Tower it means shorter days, a handful of holiday closures and boat trips that start before most people think of dinner.

Here is the winter 2026-27 calendar for the tower, what the clock change does to sunset sailing, and how to stay warm out on the river.

The quick answer

Belém Tower keeps the same hours in winter: Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30 am to 5:30 pm, last entry 5 pm. It is closed on Mondays, 25 December and 1 January. Clocks go back one hour on Sunday 25 October 2026, so sunset jumps from about 6:46 pm to 5:44 pm and sunset sails start about an hour earlier. In December the sun sets around 5:15 pm. Bring a windproof layer for any boat.

Do Belém Tower's opening hours change in winter?

No. The official regulation lists one timetable for the whole year: Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30 am to 5:30 pm, last entry at 5 pm.

The internal regulation of Jerónimos and Belém Tower has no summer or winter version. It adds that neither monument may close before 5:30 pm except for força maior, force majeure, and that special visits, official events and religious ceremonies can change the day's hours. Older pages that promise "extended summer hours" or a 10 am start describe a timetable that is not in force.

The winter twist is the light. The last half-hour slot runs from 4:30 to 5 pm, and in December the sun sets around 5:15 pm. Take that slot on a clear day and you reach the roof terrace as the river turns orange. Take it on a grey one and the rooms, mostly bare stone, feel gloomy. On short winter days we prefer the 9:30 am slot and Jerónimos straight after.

By 6 pm in December the tower is lit up. The outside and the footbridge are free to see at any hour.

When is Belém Tower closed over Christmas and New Year?

On 25 December, 1 January and every Monday. In 2026-27 that means four closed days in twelve: Monday 21, Friday 25 and Monday 28 December, and Friday 1 January.

Christmas Day and New Year's Day fall on Fridays this winter, so the holiday fortnight has two long gaps. The regulation lists only 1 January, Easter Sunday, 1 May, 13 June and 25 December as holiday closures, so the national holidays on Tuesday 1 December and Tuesday 8 December are normal opening days, and so are Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

Plan the tower for a Tuesday to Thursday if you can, and book as soon as your dates are set: the 960-a-day cap is the same in December as in August. The next closure after New Year is Easter Sunday, 28 March 2027.

What does the 25 October clock change do to sunset sail times?

Clocks in Portugal go back one hour in the early hours of Sunday 25 October 2026. Sunset moves from about 6:46 pm on the Saturday to 5:44 pm on the Sunday, and sunset sails move with it.

Sunset cruises are timed to the sun, not to a fixed clock. An October 2026 guest on the sunset and wine sail described the timing as "sunset 5:30 to 7:30". After the change the same two hours of light sit roughly 4:30 to 6:30 pm, and by December a bit earlier again. Check the start time the booking calendar shows for your date, and remember that the wine sail asks you to check in 30 minutes before at the Rent a Boat van in Doca de Belém. For the Bom Sucesso sail you meet 15 minutes before at the marina gate beside the tower.

The table uses timeanddate.com sunset times for Lisbon (December from sunrise-sunset.org). Clocks go forward again on 28 March 2027, which pushes sunset back to almost 8 pm.

Is Belém Tower less crowded in winter?

The cap does not change, so the inside never gets more crowded than 60 people. Demand drops outside the holiday weeks, which gives you more choice of slots and a calmer riverfront.

With timed entry, "crowded" now means two things: whether you can get the slot you want, and how busy the lawn, the footbridge and the promenade feel. Both ease off in Lisbon's low season, November to February. The holiday stretch from mid December to early January is the exception.

A winter day in Belém is short: about nine and a half hours of daylight around the solstice. Start at the tower at 9:30 am, walk to Jerónimos, eat at midday and keep the afternoon for the river. The Jerónimos church is free and opens at 10:30 am from Tuesday to Saturday, but only from 2 pm on Sundays, which is worth knowing on a wet Sunday morning. The order is laid out in our Belém Tower and Jerónimos guide.

Will rain or wind cancel a boat trip on the Tagus?

It depends on the boat. The sunset and wine sail says it runs in all weather; the Bom Sucesso sail depends on the weather and offers another date or a full refund if it is called off.

November to January are Lisbon's wettest months. The IPMA climate normals for Lisbon (1991 to 2020) give around 10 rainy days a month and daytime highs of 15 to 18 °C. That is mild, and the rain often comes in bands with dry hours between. On the water the wind is what you feel.

Read the small print. The sunset and wine sail states that it "operates in all weather conditions, please dress appropriately". The Bom Sucesso sail is "subject to favorable weather conditions" and needs a minimum number of passengers. All the boats on this site cancel free up to 24 hours before, so check the forecast the day before and decide then. One December 2025 guest on the Hippotrip still called it great fun "despite choosing a cold, wet day".

What should you wear on a winter boat trip in Lisbon?

A warm layer and a windproof jacket on top, closed shoes with grip, and a hat. It gets cold fast once the sun is down.

Taguscruises' own dress code for the Bom Sucesso sail is "comfortable clothes, sport shoes, sunglasses and a coat". The sunglasses are not a joke: a low winter sun on the water is bright. Guests report blankets on board. Riders on the wine sail this October noted "blankets for when the sun went down and the temperatures dropped significantly", and a Bom Sucesso guest put it shorter: "Dress warm, we were cold".

Leave the big backpack at the hotel if you are doing the tower the same day: large bags are not allowed inside. Food and drink cannot go into the tower either, and the wine sail does not let you bring your own on board. Getting there and back after dark is covered in how to get to Belém Tower, and the boats themselves in Belém Tower from the river.
